And with the likes of Laura Dern and Meryl Streep joining the younger cast members, it’s perfect post-Christmas viewing – but when’s it out in the UK?

Here’s what you need to know…

When is Little Women released in the UK?

Little Women is set for release in the UK on Boxing Day.

It’s going to be released on over 300 screens across the country – so you should be able to find somewhere showing it – and tickets for the film are now on sale from major cinema chains including Odeon, Vue, Showcase and Cineworld.

The film’s 135 minutes long and has a U certificate, with an advisory that it contains ‘very mild threat’.

Who wrote the original novel of Little Women?

Little Women was an instant hit on publication

The novel was originally penned by Louisa May Alcott.

The book – which was an instant hit, with its first print run of 2,000 copies selling out quickly – was published in two volumes in 1868 and 1869, with the book following the adventures of the March sisters and detailing their passage from childhood to womanhood.

The second volume was known in the UK as Good Wives, although the two novels were issued as a single book under the name Little Women in 1880.

Alcott also wrote two sequels, Little Men – which was published in 1871 – and Jo’s Boys in 1886.

The new adaptation of the novel is the eighth time it’s been filmed, with silent movie versions in 1917 and 1917, as well as George Cukor’s adaptation in 1933.

There were also versions made in 1949 and 1978, as well as the 1994 version starring Winona Ryder – and a modern retelling was released in 2018.
