Doctor Who fans were left shaken after series 12 concluded last night with a dramatic and gripping finale.

Viewers finally discovered who the Timeless Child is, but the final episode of the season opened up just as many questions as it answered, closing with a gripping cliffhanger.

So, who is the Timeless Child, and when will Doctor Who return?

**If you haven’t caught up on last night’s show, avert your eyes, because spoilers lie ahead…**

Who is the Timeless Child?

The Timeless Child is… no other than The Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) herself.

The revelation The Doctor is the Timeless Child is the biggest twist in the show’s modern history – perhaps even its entire history.

It completely changes the dynamic of the show, and The Doctor’s regenerations are practically limitless now – and alters the Time Lords’ own origins.

The Doctor’s history has gradually revealed itself since the show’s conception and it was previously believed she was a renegade Time Lord.

However, last night’s episode revealed that she is so much more, and from a different species from another dimension altogether.

Upon finding out her identity, she said to Sacha Dhawan’s Master: ‘You’ve given me a gift… of myself. I contain multitudes more than I ever thought, or knew.’

The episode ended with an intense cliffhanger, leading viewers to question when the show will return.

It closed with The Doctor seemingly banished to ‘whole of life imprisonment’ after she had been zapped into a prison cell by the Judoon.

With no windows in sight – how, and when will she get out?

When will Doctor Who return for the Revolution of the Daleks?

Doctor Who bosses have confirmed that ‘The Doctor and her friends will be back for a one-off extended special around Christmas and New Year.’

Showrunner Chris Chibnall said: ‘We can’t leave the Doctor there! On that cliffhanger! Well, we did. But rest assured, the Doctor and her friends will be back for a one-off extended Special around Christmas and New Year.

I don’t know when they’re going to put it on yet, otherwise, we’d tell you!

‘There will be Daleks. There will be exterminations. Thrills, laughter, tears. You know. The usual. See you at the end of the year.’

So, there you have it. The show will be back, but the date is yet to be confirmed.

The news comes after bosses revealed Doctor Who will return for a 13th season, despite a dip in ratings.

BBC drama controller threw his backing behind the show, when he told Deadline: ‘I worked on Doctor Who myself and produced it for many years and I can honestly say I don’t think it’s been in better health editorially.’

‘It will always be an important show for us and we’re a very long way from wanting to rest it.’

They have not yet confirmed when viewers can expect to see it with Chris telling EW: ‘It will be next year sometime, hopefully, unless my holiday goes on for a really long time, which is always tempting.’
