When is Christmas Jumper Day 2019 and how do I get involved?

It’s nearly time to don your most outlandish jumper in support of Christmas Jumper Day.

The annual fundraising drive for Save The Children is a vital charity event which offers the perfect opportunity to help create a brighter future for children.

Falling on Friday December 13, Christmas Jumper Day will see people across the country go to work or school dressed in a garish jumper to raise money for Save The Children.

Charity events like these are incredibly important at this time of year as they offer the perfect opportunity to combine festive fun while doing some good.

The initiative was the brainchild of charity Save the Children, which says: “Your £2 donation could change a child’s life. It could help them grow up healthy and safe, get an education, so they can grow up to be who they want to be.”

When is Christmas Jumper Day 2019?

Christmas Jumper Day falls on Friday, December 13. The charity event is always held on a Friday in the middle of December, but don’t worry if you can’t take part on the 13th.

Save the Children says you can always support the charity on a different day that suits you.

What is Christmas Jumper Day?

Launched by charity Save the Children in 2012, Christmas Jumper Day is an annual charity drive in which people are encouraged to wear their whackiest, most outlandish Christmas jumper in the name of raising money for children across the world.

Millions take part each year and a whole host of celebrities such as James Blunt, Joel Dommett, Kate Garraway, Ed Balls and Love Island’s Maura Higgins and Ovie Soko have backed it this year.

Christmas Jumper Day has managed to raise £12 million since its launch, and the charity says: “Simply by sticking on a fabulously festive knit, signing up and donating £2 to Save the Children at christmasjumperday.org, you will be helping to give the world’s forgotten children the chance to have a brighter future.”

How to get involved with Christmas Jumper Day 2019

First, you’ll need to find yourself a Christmas jumper. But remember, it doesn’t have to be a new one – instead, many people decide to decorate an existing jumper, an option which the charity is encouraging everyone do this year in an effort to be more sustainable.

They said: “This year Save the Children want people to have the most sustainable Christmas Jumper Day ever, by encouraging people to get creative and upcycle Christmas jumpers.”

It comes off the back of a recent report which has warned that most new Christmas jumpers contain plastic, which is only adding to the global plastic pollution problem. According to environmental charity Hubbub, 95% of jumpers were found to be made wholly or partly of plastic.

For Christmas Jumper Day this year, consumers are being encouraged to hold jumper swaps, while the charity itself has launched a recyclable bag that people can request online and use to donate old jumpers.

Save the Children charity shops will also be selling second-hand jumpers across the UK, while online retailers such as ASOS will be selling a selection of vintage Christmas jumpers on the online fashion platform.

Once you’re wearing your finest, you’ll be asked to donate at least £2 to Save the Children, or £1 if you are in school.

You can sign up on the Christmas Jumper Day website, and get your free fundraising pack.

And once you have that, all you need to do is encourage anyone and everyone to get involved, before donating to the charity. You could help raise even more money by setting up an online fundraising page, too.
