The draw for the Champions League group stage is underway today and many football fans will now start turning their attention to the first fixtures of the campaign.

A strong start in the competition can often help to build momentum, and all managers will be hoping for an easier group to start their season in Europe.

Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham are the four teams competing in the Champions League this year.

Manchester City were last years Premier League winners and Chelsea claimed the Europa League trophy, while Liverpool and Tottenham competed in the final of the Champions League.

When are the Champions League group stage matches?

The first group fixtures will take place on the 17 and 18 September.

Each team will play six matches in total, playing each opponent twice both home and way.

The final group stage matches will be on the 10 and 11 December, with the top two teams in each group progressing to the knockout stages.

The draw for the round of 16 matches will take place on 16 December, shortly after the group stages have come to an end.

Match day one – 17/18 September

Match day two – 1/2 October

Match day three – 22/23 October

Match day four – 5/6 November

Match day five – 26/27 November

Match day six – 10/11 December

What time is the Champions League group stage draw

The draw for the group stage of this year’s Champions League competition will start at 17.00 on Thursday 29 August.

Coverage of the draw will be shown live on the UEFA website and on BT Sport 2.
