What Unai Emery said about Sami Khedira as Arsenal tipped to make move Juventus ace

That’s according to Gunners boss Unai Emery.

Khedira is still under contract at Juventus until 2021, but a series of injuries kept him out of the side for the majority of last season.

The midfielder made just ten Serie A appearances as Juve stormed their way to the league title, their eighth in a row.

Juve have been busy in the transfer window so far this summer, having signed Aaron Ramsey and Adrien Rabiot – both centre-midfielders.

Those two signings make it even tougher for 32-year-old Khedira to fight his way back into the team, leading many to believe that he could be on his way out.

And on Sunday, fans thought they had been given a big clue over his future.

Khedira appeared in the stands at the Emirates Cup on Sunday, heavily suggesting that he was in line for a move to Arsenal.

The Gunners are keen to improve their defensive options, and fans hoped that Khedira could be brought in to reinforce their squad.

But Emery insisted that there was no link between the player and the club.

“Khedira is a very good player but this is the first time I have heard his name mentioned,” he told a press conference after his side’s 2-1 defeat to Lyon.

Arsenal are still expected to splash out this week, with moves for Kieran Tierney and Nicolas Pepe believed to be close.

Pepe is likely to cost £72million from Lille, whilst Tierney is set to join for £25m.

And Emery insisted that the club is only focused on signing players who can improve the team right away.

“Nicolas Pepe is a very good player and we are thinking only about signing players who will really, really improve this squad and also give us different conditions,” he said.

“We have been working for the last few weeks to get the best team with the best players in our squad before our first game against Newcastle.

“There are different players on the table with the possibility we can achieve their signature. At the beginning of the market, we were thinking to do one centre-back, one full-back and one winger. We are still thinking the same way.

“Really I want a better team than last season with only new players who can improve the squad and help us to achieve our ambitions.”
