What to wear to Cheltenham races in the rain: stylish outfit ideas for the bad weather

In Britain, the weather is always unpredictable.

And, although we keep our fingers crossed for endless Pimms in the sun during the annual horse racing season, racegoers at day one of Cheltenham Festival  quickly discovered that it’s not always the case.

As Storm Gareth batters the UK with heavy rain and strong winds, racing fanatics are holding onto more than just their hats as they arrive at the racecourse.

Although dress codes vary, Cheltenham Festival is far more casual than sartorially strict Royal Ascot, so here are three outfits you can wear come rain or shine.

The jumpsuit

A jumpsuit is a winning choice for racing season.

Summer whites may be off-limits if the weather is grey and gloomy, but it doesn’t mean you need to revert back to your winter wardrobe habits.

Khaki is the perfect solution, offering a darker, more forgiving shade, yet still with a summer-ready twist. This Lisa Marie Fernandez all-in-one has all the right details, from a dramatic wide-leg and trendy puff sleeve silhouette.

Add animal print accessories for a stylish finishing touch. Our bet is on snakeskin being top of the sartorial charts this summer.

The Power Suit

You can’t go wrong with a strong power suit. The androgynous ensemble always comes off as stylish and elegant whatever the occasion. So, if you’re looking for a way to inject a large helping of bold colour into your day, this is the way to do it.

From hot pink to daffodil yellow and royal blue, no shade is too bright this season. The simple yet effective ensemble also means you can add a statement heel, which is one of the hottest shoes trends this season. A power suit is bound to be a solid addition to your 2019 wardrobe.

Maxi is the new mini

When the weather is not your friend, the last thing you want is to be worrying about is your mini dress flying up all day. Therefore, stay on the safe side and opt for a dress that falls just above the ankles. Not only is it weather-proof, it’s also effortlessly sophisticated.

You can still be playful with print and colours, from flower power at Rixo to metallic designs by The Vampire’s Wife. However, if the weather is giving you more goosebumps than spring-like vibes, we suggest opting for a timeless monochrome pattern such as this retro Zimmermann number, which also has long sleeves as an added bonus.

As for shoes? We all know there’s nothing worse than cold, wet feet, so forgo the strappy sandals for sensible (but no less stylish) heeled ballerina pumps.
