What to do
It would be remiss not to spend an hour or two at Frida Kahlo’s Blue House. A short drive away in Mexico’s Coyoacán district, two functionalist homes designed by Juan O’Gorman — one that belonged to Kahlo and the other to her husband, muralist Diego Rivera — are open to the public. Back in the city centre, call in at the circular Museo de Arte Moderno.
The entire town of San Miguel De Allende is a Unesco World Heritage Site, so walking through its narrow streets and sitting in the open squares is a sublime experience in itself. For a creative fix on the edge of town, Galería Atotonilco offers up an extraordinary collection of Mexican folk art.
Where to eat
Contramar has some of the best (and most instagrammed) seafood in Mexico City, while at Meroma, the menu devised by the husband-and-wife team is as innovative as the 1980s modernist building that houses the restaurant. For tacos that are fresh, fatty and unforgettably good, join the queue at Taqueria Orinoco. For those with a sweet tooth, the most famous churros in San Miguel De Allende are served at Café San Agustín, a quaint little spot owned by the beloved Mexican telenovela star, Margarita Gralia.
When to go
Set in a sprawling highland basin, Mexico City enjoys pleasant temperatures and sunny skies whatever the season, but there can be evening downpours in the summer months. October to May is best for dry, clement weather, so now’s the perfect time to book your trip. Meanwhile, a scenic four-hour drive from the capital, San Miguel De Allende has reliably lovely weather all year round.
