The upcoming show has already caused controversy before it’s even been aired, with some threatening to boycott the service, and a petition already calling for the show to be banned.

It’s due out tomorrow – but what time will it be arriving, what’s it about and why has it proven divisive?

Here’s what you need to know…

What time is Messiah released on Netflix UK?

There are 10 episodes in the first series, and they’ll all be released at once, meaning you can binge-watch to your heart’s content.

What is Messiah about?

The official synopsis reads thus:  ‘A CIA officer investigates a charismatic figure whose followers believe that he can perform miracles.

‘Is he a divine entity or a dangerous con artist?’

Why has Messiah been controversial?

There has been anger expressed over the central character, who is labelled Al-Massih – a name remarkably similar to the evil figure in Islamic eschatology called Al-Masih ad-Dajjal – someone branded a liar and compared to the Antichrist.

As part of the show, Al-Massih aims to cross 2,000 Palestinian Syrians over the border of Israel.

Viewers who have seen the trailer claim the show will be anti-Islamic and disrespectful to their beliefs, while Christians have also suggested that the show is blasphemous.

‘This does not just insult one religion, but many,’ said one person. ‘This is not a subject that can be taken as a joke and shouldn’t be used for entertainment and “thrill”.

Show creator Michael Petroni has defended the show, saying ‘they didn’t set out to offend anyone’.

‘It’s not like I’m welcoming backlash,’ he explained. ‘We expect that there’s going to be a lot of noise around the show, and a lot of debate.’

  • Michelle Monaghan as Eva Geller
