American musician Scott Walker has died aged 76 after nearly 50 years of performing.

The singer saw most of his success arise in the UK where he eventually became a citizen in 1970.

Scott started his career as part of a trio called The Walker Brothers and the group went on to produce three ten albums.

He provided the lead vocals for the group, and he also played guitar and the keyboard for some of their tracks.

Confirming Scott’s death, his label 4AD said: ‘For half a century, the genius of the man born Noel Scott Engel has enriched the lives of thousands, first as one third of The Walker Brothers, and later as a solo artist, producer and composer of uncompromising originality.’

Scott Walker’s most successful songs

While working as the lead singer for The Walker Brothers, Scott saw his group produce numerous hits.

The trio produced eight albums between 1965 and 1978, with their first release Take It Easy with the Walker Brothers reached number three in the UK albums chart.

This was matched by Portrait which was released one year later.

Scott Walker and the rest of his group enjoyed two number one singles in the UK towards the start of their career with Make It Easy on Yourself getting the top spot in 1965, while The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore reached number one in 1966.

He then left the group in 1967 to focus on his solo music career with his first album Scott reaching third in the UK album chart that year.

Scott followed that up with Scott 2 the following year, which reached number one in the album chart.

One of his biggest hits as a solo performer was his cover of Jackie, which was banned by the BBC for some of its controversial lyrics.

His second success came when he released Joanna in 1968, which peaked at number 7 in the UK singles chart.

Scott reunited with The Walker Brothers in 1975 and the group was able to produce three more albums before splitting again in 1978.

Remember Me from their album No Regrets became one of the last big hits that the group produced when it reached number 7 in the charts.

More recently he released his album Soused in 2014 which reached 30th in the UK album chart.
