Manchester United value Donny van de Beek at less than £40million and believe they can sign the Dutchman for a fee in the region of £36m.

The Red Devils were keen on signing the Dutchman in 2019 but cooled their interest as Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish became a priority target.

However, with Grealish valued at around £80m, United have revived their interest in van de Beek and believe he represents a more viable option.

United’s chances have been helped by the fact that Madrid have cooled their interest as they’re unwilling to spend big this summer due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Madrid had agreed personal terms with van de Beek and were ready to pay around £49m but they’re set to make losses of around £150m this calendar year and have parked all transfers

That’s opened the door to United and according to the Times executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward hopes to secure a deal at a fee of around £36m.

Ajax CEO Edwin van der Sar has admitted that both Madrid and United are interested in the midfielder but he insists any talk of getting players on the cheap this summer are misplaced.

‘Last year, we made verbal agreements with [Andre] Onana, [Nicolas] Tagliafico and Van de Beek to stay another season, and then we look to help each other and find the next step in their careers,’ said Van der Sar.

‘Nothing has changed. There won’t be a 50% discount. The clubs can forget about that.’
