What Harry Maguire told Man Utd team-mates in closing stages of Chelsea win

Manchester United new-boy Harry Maguire revealed he told his team-mates to keep their concentration and keep a clean sheet even after going four goals ahead of Chelsea at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils ran riot in the second half as Maguire enjoyed a dream start to his career with the club after a big-money move last week.

Two goals in two minutes just after the hour mark put Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side in cruise control before Maguire’s fellow debutant, Daniel James, capped off a memorable afternoon with 10 minutes remaining.

But Maguire says the fact United kept just two clean sheets at home last season was playing on their mind as he vocally ordered his team-mates to keep their concentration even with the victory assured.

Harry Maguire helped Man Utd get their season off to a dream start with a 4-0 win

“I was reiterating on the pitch that ‘we need to concentrate now’, even after three and four (goals),” Maguire told Sky Sports.

“We wanted a clean sheet. We knew coming into the season that there was only two clean sheets here last year.

“We’ve really got to make this a fortress and make this our place to come and score.

“It’s a good start. We’re not getting carried away but we’ll keep working and keep improving.”

Maguire warned his team-mates they needed to keep their concentration

Maguire was named man of the match after a rock-solid display after becoming the world’s most expensive defender.

But he warned his future opponents he will only improve as he settles into life with the Red Devils.

He added: “I felt good. I’ve only had three or four days with the lads, so don’t get me wrong, I’m going to get better.”

Maguire was rock solid defensively in his first Man Utd appearance

Former United boss Jose Mourinho felt Maguire gave his side confidence to play with more freedom going forward.

“I think he did (give the team confidence),” Mourinho said in his post-game analysis on Sky Sports.

“You can be very dangerous in attack, but if you feel that the defensive mistake is around the corner, it takes your confidence to play, you don’t play as well as you can.”
