Jeff Hendrick was also on debut and also on the scoresheet. He told BBC Sport:

“It was different for me after four good years at Burnley. From day one the lads have made me feel welcome and I was just raring to get going.

“You see in training the squad that is here. The strikers can all score and all bring different qualities to the team. We had to dig deep and work hard for it.

“At half time both teams had had chances. We kept going and thankfully put our chances away.”

Debutant and goalscorer for Newcastle, Callum Wilson, told Sky Sports:

“I seemed to get off to a good start on my debut and it was a great team performance. We were solid at the back and that gave us the platform.

“I am quite a confident person anyway and my job is to score goals. I feel this is a great squad with great potential and I am trying to be the definitive piece in the puzzle, putting the ball in the net.

“I like this place, I like playing against West Ham. It is not a disrespectful thing but I keep scoring against them. It is about being consistent and building on this performance for the next game.

“We were well organised, the shape and the way we set up gave us that platform. The reason I joined here was great players in the squad and I could have had a hat-trick. As long as they keep coming, I’m happy.

“It is disappointing that my debut goal wasn’t in front of the fans who would have travelled down.”

The final whistle goes and Newcastle take a well deserved three points back to the North East with them. It’s Newcastle first win on the opening day for eight years. West Ham have lost on the opening day for the fourth year in a row without scoring.

90 mins: Game over. It’s not be overly exciting but it’s been effective from Steve Bruce’s men, especially his newcomers. Newcastle look like a steady, organised unit. West Ham have not been good. They’ve put very little pressure on the ball or Newcastle’s back line. It good be a long season for them.

Five added minutes to play.
