West Ham considering swoop for Sheff Utd’s Wilder as replacement for Pellegrini

WEST HAM are reportedly considering a swoop to try and bring Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder in to replace Manuel Pellegrini.

The under-pressure Hammers chief was backed with £100m transfer funds last summer but a dramatic slump in form has led to huge relegation fears.

Now the Daily Mirror claims the East London club have Wilder “in their crosshairs” as they consider Pellegrini’s future.

If the 55-year-old is unable to halt the slide, West Ham’s hierarchy are believed to be in favour of appointing a British coach.

And that has led to claims ex-Brighton boss Chris Hughton and David Moyes – who kept them up in 2018, are also potentially in the frame.

But it’s Wilder who seems to be above them both in the list of preferred replacements.

The 52-year-old has led Sheffield United straight from League One into the Premier League.

And his side continued their impressive start to the top-flight campaign on Sunday with a 3-3 draw with Manchester United.

Despite many tipping them for an instant return to the Championship, they have now taken points off the Red Devils, West Ham, Chelsea, Spurs and defeated Arsenal.

Pellegrini’s side were as high a fifth after they beat Man United in September, but now they are just two places above the bottom three after losing at home to Tottenham on Saturday.

Pellegrini still has 18 months left on his £10m-a-year contract, and the Hammers board are still willing him to pull them out of this mess.

But the loss of first-choice goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski has hit his men hard, with No.2 stopper Roberto enduring several calamity displays.

He has yet to keep a clean sheet and he and his team-mates have daunting trips to Chelsea and Wolves up next.
