Weekend Hot Topic, part 2: Most anticipated video games of 2022 – Metro.co.uk

Readers reveal what new video games they’re most looking forward to in the next 12 months, from Elden Ring to Sonic Frontiers.

As the first Hot Topic of the new year the obvious subject to start with was what new games you’re most looking forward to in 2022, especially since the release schedules are already notably busier than 2021.

Obvious titles like Elden Ring, Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2, and Horizon Forbidden West were mentioned a lot, but also more obscure picks and hopes for new hardware like the PlayStation VR2.

A wild sequel
2022 is set to be a good year for games, as far as you can tell from looking at the release schedule, but despite great looking games like Elden Ring and Marvel’s Midnight Suns there’s no question of what I’m most looking forward to this year, it’s Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2 (or whatever it really ends up being called).

I’m a Zelda fan anyway but Breath Of The Wild was so amazingly good that the thought of a sequel is such a no-brainer I’ll probably end up pre-ordering it in my sleep. Even if it was half as a good – or a quarter as good! – it’d still be an amazing game and I can’t wait to play it.

That said, I will definitely get the other games I’ve mentioned, especially Elden Ring, and I’m also interested in Splatoon 3 and Bayonetta 3. I’ll definitely get them, no matter what, the biggest problem there is whether they’ll actually come out this year or not.

Back on the cycle
I realise I’m a fool for setting myself up like this but I’m going to go ahead and say Sonic Frontiers. Yes, I know all about the Sonic cycle. I know promising looking game always turn out to be a disappointment. But maybe, just maybe, not this time? I mean, even by the law of averages, Sonic Team must get something right at some point?

To me the screenshots they’ve shown off look very good and while there’s only a few seconds of probably-not-gameplay so far I think it manages to keep the Sonic look, in terms of graphics and implied gameplay, while still doing something new and interesting with the gameplay. I’m optimistic… although I’ll still wait for the reviews.

Next best thing
Although it doesn’t seem to be attracting much interest from other people I’m really looking forward to Gotham Knights. It seems an eternity since we’ve had a new Batman game and while this isn’t quite that it’s close enough (plus, I hope it’s story will be a route back into a standalone sequel with the man himself).

I guess he’s also in the Suicide Squad game too (as a mind-controlled bad guy?) but not even I can feel optimistic about that. It just seems so generic at the moment, in terms of how it looks, the bad guys, and how all the characters are just using guns. We’ll see though, maybe it’ll surprise everyone.

MMO VR
I was all ready to write in and say my most anticipated game is probably Horizon Forbidden West. I was one of those strange people who preferred the original to Zelda: Breath Of The Wild and I can’t wait to see where it goes next – including the VR spin-off.

Then I receive an email saying that Zenith will release on all major VR platforms this month. I’ve been excited about this one for a while, which looks great and is promising ongoing support. To be honest, I know it’s a very small team so I was concerned it may never actually make it – especially on the aging PlayStation VR. But now it’s officially announced for 27th January and so that has leapfrogged over Horizon.

Happy New Year everyone – lots to look forward to.

Fabulous hopes
What I’m really hoping for this year is Fable. I realise the originals have their problems but I have very fond memories of Fable 2 in particular. Plus, I’d just like to see Microsoft get a grip of themselves and start making great games again. I guess they already have with Forza and Halo but those franchises have never interested me and so much of what they do is so… American. In style even if not in setting.

Fable has always been very British though, and still seems to be from the teaser and the fact that Playground Games are working on it, so I’m very excited about that. Xbox has always needed it’s equivalent to Zelda, or at least some kind of action role-player, and I’m hoping this could really be it.

Hellblade 2 is also something I was definitely interested but like many I wasn’t impressed by the recent ‘gameplay’ trailer, which seemed to contain no actual gameplay and made what I thought were supposed to be internal visualisations of her mental struggles actual monsters. Maybe we’re missing some context from what was going on but the sequel going for the reverse of ‘it was all a dream’ trope seems like a bad decision to me.

Ancient history
The game I’m looking forward to most this year is PowerSlave: Exhumed. It’s a remake of the Saturn and PS1 game that was named Exhumed over here. I remember playing it at the time, and it was great. It’s a first person shooter with Metroidvania elements in it, set in ancient Egypt.

I’m not usually one for shooters, but I can’t wait to get my hands on this. My expectations are high for it, as it’s being developed by Nightdive Studios, who handles the Turok modern updates, and they weren’t too bad. The released footage of it looks promising, so hopefully it will be decent and not sour my memories of it.

A promising year
Happy New Year everyone and a pretty decent happy schedule time for game releases in 2022, with Elden Ring, Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2, God Of War Ragnarök, and Horizon Forbidden West on my current radar! This will more than keep me entertained. Especially as I at last made the leap and bought a shiny, brand new Nintendo Switch OLED and the first Breath Of The Wild game.

I went back to GC’s original review of Breath Of The Wild and finalised my decision then, as I had a gut feeling that this is a game that needed to be played. Basically, it was the right time to invest in the latest Nintendo console.

The last God Of War was a ridiculously lavish game world with such powerful and addictive combat, and it still amazes me that the game was developed with such high standards and quality, which set a very high bar to beat indeed.

Horizon is the same in every way regarding the graphical textures, colours, characters, and the rich soundtrack and creatures and enemies you face. All the games mentioned above are expected to be near perfect, and the hype can get in the way and could put a dent in the expectations for me personally.

These titles have such proven developers that this should, hopefully, be enough to see 2022 as a possible contender year for consoles and PC games, with more legendary titles than for a good long time! But as they say, we shall see. GC have really got their work cut out this year for sure.
