Weekend Hot Topic, part 2: Mega Drive vs. SNES

When I went over to my friend’s house and he answered the door and said ‘I have the Mega Drive’, I just stared at him thinking, ‘Great, what was that?!’ I was into the Amiga and even though I played on the original Nintendo Entertainment System, I was not familiar with Sega’s machines.

Needless to say, I was blown away by it and Altered Beast became a favourite. Revenge Of Shinobi, Sonic The Hedgehog, Golden Axe, Mickey Mouse: Castle Of Illusion, and John Madden’s American Football were other favourites and basically it was Sega all the way.

I was already familiar with Mario and some other Nintendo favourites like Castlevania, etc. but when a game called Super Mario World came along… game-changer is a phase I’d use but when Super Mario Kart came then wow, this Super Nintendo Entertainment System is pretty powerful stuff. Then a game called The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past took the local community by storm and Nintendo won me over that instant. Who were Sega again?

Me and my brother put in a saving scheme together and after a few long months I went to Woolworths and bought the Super Mario World SNES original edition and literally it was like our world was just fun, fun, fun. Me and my brothers’ friends would co-op and compete with each other in all of our respective homes on the variety of games we had and controllers were bought from other friends’ homes for four-player tournaments and that’s how great memories are made.

The Mega Drive and SNES were two of the best consoles of all time and even though I went the way of Nintendo right up to the GameCube, until Sony and Microsoft took over, it was the SNES which made me a Nintendo maniac and the days of being a Sega warrior were limited to certain amount of times.

With the graphical richness of the Donkey Kong Country series and Earthworm Jim, Yoshi’s Island, plus a whole host of classics like Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Super Star Wars etc., the SNES was just special in every way. I can play these games now and still get great playability from them, more than most of the PS1 polygon messes from some of the titles I liked at the time.

So I vote the SNES the clear winner, but no disrespect to the Mega Drive as that system just did not have Nintendo’s quality and the great games of Sega were outnumbered by the greater games of Nintendo. But both gave me great memories and boosted me into a full-time gamer and eventually nostalgia heaven, of which I’ll always be grateful for.
