While clothes shopping felt a little, well, pointless at the start of lockdown (why would you spend money on a beautiful new dress when you’ll only be wearing tracksuit bottoms for the foreseeable?), as restrictions lift slightly and we all begin to tentatively emerge into the real world for occasional, socially-distanced picnics, our desire to update our wardrobe has returned.
After all, the last time we wore *actual* clothes we were technically still in winter, and summer begins on Saturday. So having bypassed our spring outfits altogether, summer outfits deserve a little extra attention.

While it can be tempting, now that they’re discounted, to snap up the slightly more rogue, fashion-forward pieces that you’ve had your eye on, we’d recommend staying relatively close to your true style this season. With lockdown not yet fully lifted, it’s wise to bear in mind that you’ll want anything you buy right now to be a viable option either as a transitional piece moving into autumn or a high summer look next year.
Shapes that you know you love, pieces that can be worn multiple ways and timeless staples are a good place to start. If you’re umming and ahing over an item, check that it fits one of those categories and you can be pretty confident that it’s a justified purchase.
