We all need a bit of Chrissy Teigen’s at-home face masking RN

Ok, so things are a little bit complicated for all of us but thinking of #SilverLinings, our skincare is getting a bit of a good deal right now.

Firstly, we’ve now got way more time on our hands to properly get back into that abandoned routine (hello, double-cleansing!) And, since we are all mostly working from home, we can do those rituals we only ever previously did on weekends, all the time – something Chrissy Teigen just reminded us.

The social media star posted footage of her getting into high-tech face masking during the day. As she complied with the current social distancing rules, Teigen was seen cosying up on her sofa at home, watching, appropriately given the circumstances, Home Alone, while wearing a LED face mask. While it may have been a shocking sight for anyone not familiar with the red devil-like masks, it got us thinking that we too can indulge in this kind of behaviour every friggin’ day. Yeah we are still getting used to this whole new (temporary) world.

There’s nothing new about LED masks (which stands for light emitting diode masks), they’ve been around long enough to be a fixture in most good skincare clinics, beauty tech-lovers’ bathrooms and celeb Instagram accounts – Victoria Beckham and Kate Hudson are among the A-listers who have shared photos of themselves using them. You can’t own an LED mask and not take a picture.

If you’re wondering what they do, the masks offer LED light therapy – a treatment commonly used to minimise acne breakouts and generally improve the condition and appearance of the skin.

Using an array of Red, Blue and Near-Infrared LED lights, wavelengths of light are emitted to the skin at a cellular level . Each light has different benefits – blue light triggers photochemical oxidation in order to kill bacteria on the skin, which is excellent for people with acne, eczema or rosacea, Red light stimulates cell renewal while Near-Infrared has no colour but reduces inflammation and redness in the skin.

While the stronger-performing LED lights can be found in clinics, that LED at-home mask you might have buried away somewhere is a brilliant way of delivering a daily dose of light therapy while you’re working from home – just remember to take it off for that Zoom call.

Thanks for the reminder, Chrissy.
