As a former Everton and Manchester United player it’s no surprise which team Wayne Rooney would rather not see win the Premier League title this season.
The 33-year-old, who now plays for MLS side DC United in the US, was asked by radio station talkSPORT who will win the 2018-19 championship, Liverpool or Manchester City?
Liverpool are currently two points clear at the top of the Premier League table but Man City have a game in hand.
Rooney, a boyhood Everton supporter, hopes it won’t be the Toffees’s Merseyside rivals who lift the trophy at the end of the campaign.
“It’s a great reason to be out the country when those two are going head to head for the title,” Rooney joked.
“I hope Man City get over the line before Liverpool. I couldn’t bear to see them win it, it would be a nightmare for any Evertonian.
“I remember in 2005 they won the Champions League and they’re still talking about it now so it would be another ten or 15 years of that!”
Ole should get the job
After leaving Everton for Manchester United as an 18-year-old Rooney spent 13 seasons with the Red Devils.
The former England captain broke the all-time goalscoring record for United and also won five Premier League titles and one Champions League with the club.
He keeps a keen eye on the results from Old Trafford and the progress the club is making under caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who replaced Jose Mourinho in December.
Backing his old team-mate Solskjaer to get the job on a full-time basis, Rooney told talkSPORT: “He has gone in with simplicity and has brought belief back to the fans.
“He has made the place enjoyable again to go into work every day. The staff around Carrington are enjoying working there again and that does rub off. When you see the staff happy around the players, it makes it a happy environment to work in.
“He is doing a fantastic job and I’m sure he is the only candidate for Manchester United to take that job and it will be great to see him get it and bring some of the players he wants to bring in and keep moving the club forward.”
