Wayne Rooney has contacted police, believing he was ‘set up’ after a number of photos showing him with women at a nightclub and hotel room went viral.

The images, which were widely shared on social media, showed the 35-year-old close with women in a club and then asleep in a hotel room with women – who were wearing very little – posing around him.

MailOnline reports that Rooney’s lawyers have made a complaint to Greater Manchester Police and an investigation has been launched.

The England and Manchester United great feels he has been ‘set up’ in the photos and is insistent that he has done nothing wrong. There is also no suggestion of wrongdoing on his part.

The pictures are believed to have been taken on Saturday night in Manchester, shortly after the Derby County manager saw his side lose 2-1 to Salford City in a pre-season friendly.

Rooney has been with wife Coleen for nearly 20 years, with the couple having four sons together since their marriage in 2008.

The Rams manager has recently vowed to remain in charge of the club despite terrible financial troubles and only nine senior players currently registered.

‘It’s other people which I can’t control who need to make bigger decisions that I do,’ he told Sky Sports on Saturday.

‘All I can do is try to bring some dignity and pride back to this club. It is clear that has gone in the last few years and it is my job to bring that back. I need other people to do their job.’
