Watchmen starring Regina King has the world gripped after its pilot landed

From the channel that hosted TV show Game of Thrones, HBO’s latest venture, The Watchmen, already has everybody talking.

The brainchild of Damon Lindelhof, the series takes the form of a sequel to the original comic book story in the same alternate universe, but all set in present day 2019.

Context plays a huge part in the show’s premise and its setting, Tulsa, Oklahoma, is the foundation. Known primarily for one of the worst racially motivated attacks on black residents and businesses, the Tulsa Race Riots of 1921, racial tensions frame the show’s narrative.

With Oscar winner Regina King as the leading lady, it’s dramatic, plays with the racial dynamics of Tulsa’s history and, of course, has the fantastical elements we all love. There’s also nine episodes in the series to keep us entertained.

Regina plays detective Angela Abar, a mother-of-three and bakery owner during the day and a black-clad vigilante-style detective at night.

We follow Angela’s journey as she tries to help stop the white Seventh Cavalry from taking control with a reign of terror and violence, all the while living her more normal life during the day.

Starring alongside Regina is Oscar winner Jeremy Irons, Miami Vice’s Don Johnson and Tim Blake Nelson as her detective partner.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the Watchmen storylines played out on screen. The long awaited Watchmen film released in 2009 is what started it all off, and rumours about the birth of a Watchmen TV show had been around since 2015.

The show’s pilot has already aired, but is repeated on Monday night at 9pm on Sky Atlantic. Alternatively, you can watch it on Sky’s streaming service, NOW TV.
