Awards season kicks off in earnest on January 6 with the 77th annual Golden Globes.
The star-studded ceremony celebrates achievement in film and TV, with awards voted for by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. As ever, it will take place at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles – though this time around, guests will enjoy a full vegan menu, as organisers have decided to opt for 100 per cent plant-based catering.
Stars up for major awards include Olivia Colman, who has been nominated for her turn as Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown, Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer and Fleabag star and creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
Ricky Gervais is back on hosting duties for a record fifth time, though he has vowed that this will be his last Golden Globes gig. The British star is well known for taking no prisoners when it comes to his controversial jokes – but who will be the subject of his punchlines this time around?

The HFPA failed to nominate a single female director yet again, so perhaps Gervais – or one of the celebrity guest presenters – will channel Natalie Portman and draw attention to this glaring omission.
Failing that, there’s always Cats. Tom Hooper’s film adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical did not go down well with critics upon its release late last year, but managed to scrape a single nomination in the Best Song category, thanks to Beautiful Ghosts, an original track written by Taylor Swift and Lloyd Webber.
It could be a huge night for Jennifer Lopez, who is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Hustlers. The last time the star received a Golden Globe nomination was back in 1998 for music biopic Selena, though she’ll have to face competition from the likes of Laura Dern, Margot Robbie, Annette Bening and Kathy Bates.
Looking at the numbers, it’s also likely to be a successful evening for Netflix. Though the streaming service has previously enjoyed success with the Globes’ television categories, it has previously struggled to make the leap over to the film awards.
But after picking up Best Foreign Language Film with Roma in 2019, Netflix is now dominating the prestigious Best Film categories, with three out of five nominations for Drama and one in Musical or Comedy.
