After Dean Smith’s side went down 2-1 at his old stomping ground, Terry tried to keep the peace with the present Blues players.

But as midfielder Kovacic headed towards the tunnel, Chelsea legend JT clearly clasped hands too hard and hurt the Croatian.

Wincing Kovacic – who played the full 90 minutes – visibly let out a yelp and quickly hurried off, shaking and grabbing his hand to try and numb the obvious pain.

Hard-as-nails Terry, who played 717 times for the West London club and won 14 major trophies, then held up his hand to say sorry for the accidental damage done.

Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker joked: “Quick little handshake… oh he’s strong is John! Sorry about that! Three points but only three fingers.”

Pundit Jermaine Jenas asked: “Did he mean it?”

But Danny Murphy replied: “No, I don’t think so,” as the trio laughed at replays of the incident.

Unsurprisingly, though, Twitter was left in hysterics.

One person wrote: “Hands of Steel.”

Another said: “John Terry taking out the pain of the defeat on Mateo Kovacic’s knuckles.”

A third added: “I think Terry just broke Kovacic’s hand giving him a high five.”

And a final user simply asked: “What did John Terry do to Kovacic’s hand?”
