WATCH: Frightening moment plane bursts into flames as passengers escape in viral video

A plane burst into flames at a Brazil airport on Tuesday, forcing passengers to scramble to escape. A viral video has captured the burning plane billowing huge clouds of smoke as travellers hurry down the plane steps of the Latam Airlines flight. Passengers can be seen running away from the aircraft with their luggage. Others stand on the tarmac filming the dramatic sight of the burning plane.

The fire is said to have begun on the luggage conveyor belt near the cargo hold shortly after the plane landed from Sao Paulo.

Firefighters arrived on the scene to tackle the blaze and bring it under control.

A photograph from the Brazil airport captured the scorched underside of the plane.

A huge black mark can be seen blazoned across the exterior next to the cargo hold door.

The shocking incident took place at Confins International Airport, in Belo Horizonte, south-east Brazil.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the fire which is now being investigated.

Airport authorities have said the cause of the blaze is currently unknown.

A spokesperson for BH Airport authorities, which manages the terminal, told Sun Online: “The plane landed safely and passengers were safely removed from the aircraft and accommodated in other aircraft belonging to the airline.

“The Emergency Operations Centre (COE) team, responsible for the logistics of emergency services at the airport, was immediately activated.

“They directed two fire fighting vehicles from the aerodrome fire fighters team. They immediately (brought the blaze under) control.”

Express.co.uk has also contacted BH Airport for further comment on the fire.

Airlines have clamped down on what passengers cannot bring on board a plane in a bid to avoid fire

Portable battery chargers, power banks or spare lithium batteries over certain wattage, depending on the airline, must not be put in the hold in case they explode or set alight.

In the pressurised hold, this could cause a lot of damage to the plane, as opposed to the cabin where the flight crew can deal with the issue.

Due to the flammable electrolyte inside that allows them to be recharged, this means they can quickly ignite if packed tightly or subject to certain temperatures.

According to Gatwick Airport: “Lithium batteries should be carried in your hand luggage only.”

Lighters also have strict rules. Only one cigarette lighter per person can be brought on board, according to current rules. “You should put it inside a resealable plastic bag (like the ones used for liquids), which you must keep on you throughout the flight,” said the FCO.

However, if you want to take a lighter away, you mustn’t pack it in your hold luggage – it can only travel on your person. “You cannot put [a lighter] in your hold luggage or put it in your hand luggage after screening,” stated the FCO.
