WATCH: Flight forced to land after passenger becomes trapped in toilet

A United Airlines flight destined for San Francisco was forced to make an emergency stop in Denver when a passenger became trapped in the toilet on board. Flight 1554, which took off from Washington DC, had to contact mechanical services on the ground to help free the female passenger. The incident occurred when the door to the lavatory became jammed. Once staff on board became aware of the situation, the flight was redirected to the closest airport.

A video of a mechanic working on opening the door to the bathroom was shared on Twitter by a passenger onboard the flight.

The commotion can be seen in the video, with passengers stood up in their seats to get a better view of the incident.

A man is heard saying: “We’re just working on opening the door at the moment ma’am; we’ll get you out soon, okay.”

The woman was safely freed and there were no calls for medical assistance.

According to a report by KPIX-TV, one passenger on the flight said the woman “seemed fine” when she finally escaped the bathroom.

The report went on to say: “Everyone clapped, the woman came out, they all felt very bad for her.

“I mean, I don’t know how she was with landing in the bathroom, but she was fine.”

The planned journey was delayed for two hours while the rescue mission was underway.

Initially due to arrive in San Francisco at 20:38pm local time, it instead landed in Denver 7:21pm, before finally making it to its final destination after 10.00pm.

A spokesperson for the airline said: “We are reaching out to all customers onboard and the customer in the lavatory to apologise.”

Another flight faced a delay in China recently, when a passenger reportedly opened an emergency door because the cabin was “too stuffy”.

The unnamed traveller was caught on camera complaining about the lack of “fresh air” on board.

Footage shows a row of passengers sat beside a gaping emergency door, revealing the airport tarmac below.

The incident happened at Wuhan Tianhe International airport on 23 September.

Police were called to the scene and the passenger was subsequently arrested.
