WATCH | Black mamba plays hide and seek with KZN snake catcher

A crafty 2.1m black mamba challenged snake catcher Nick Evans to a game of hide and seek – and lost.

“Captures where you work hard are usually more fun and rewarding,” Evans told News24.

The slithery creature had found a hiding spot in a packed garden shed in Newlands West, Durban.

Evans said the homeowner discovered the snake when he went to the shed to look for a brush cutter.

The mamba was stretched out next to the garden tool.

“The owner said the snake looked like a weird looking pipe, and that he almost grabbed it.”

However, when the snake moved, he realised what it was and called Evans. When he arrived, the snake was still in the same spot.

It took Evans three attempts before he was able to capture the snake.

“It was right there! But I was using old tongs… I opened the door and tried to grab it, but I missed, and it vanished.”

Evans then started clearing out the shed.

On his second attempt, he accidentally dropped his torch. “I really needed the light. That was a bit of a hair-raising moment,” he recalled.

Evans eventually struck gold on his third attempt.

Although the task was arduous, it took Evans about 15 minutes to complete.
