But they only realised the blunder when the plane landed and the “welcome to Edinburgh” announcement was made on Monday.

The flight, operated by WDL Aviation on behalf of British Airways, was diverted by mistake after operators gave the crew the wrong flight path.

The bizarre moment was caught on video, as one worker jokingly asked the packed plane: “No one to Edinburgh? No one to Edinburgh?”

The passengers shout back “no” and he answers: “Ok. Please don’t make photos or videos.”

Speaking over the tannoy, he tells the cabin “holey smoley” and the passengers can be heard laughing in disbelief.

Passengers can be heard asking each other “how can you now know that?” and another said: “The embarrassment of taking us to the wrong place”.

We told earlier how puzzled passengers, who claimed staff failed to check boarding passes, blasted the airline after they were forced to wait on the tarmac for two and a half hours.

Management consultant Sophie Cooke, 24, told how everyone thought the pilot was joking when he announced the plane was about to land in Edinburgh.

Once on the ground, passengers were asked to raise their hands if they wanted to go to Dusseldorf.

Sophie, who was held up by the blunder as she travelled from London to the German city for work, said: “The pilot said he had no idea how it had happened.

“He said it had never happened before and that the crew was trying to work out what we could do.

“It became very frustrating. The toilets were blocked and they ran out of snacks. It was also really stuffy.”

The plane, which started at London’s City Airport, was then redirected and landed in Düsseldorf.

A second video captures the moment staff told passengers about the extended trip to Germany.

He adds: “We apologise about that.

“We don’t know where…..where the problem is but in a second [sic] and we do the best to bring you as soon as possible to Dusseldorf. Sorry.”

The flight left London City Airport at 7.47am yesterday and headed north before landing in Edinburgh at around 9am.

After the unexpected stop, the plane then took off again at 10.30am to make a second attempt to reach Düsseldorf where it eventually landed.

British Airways initially told passengers the plane had been “diverted” but later admitted the error.

A BA spokesman said: “We are working with WDL Aviation, who operated this flight on behalf of British Airways, to establish why the incorrect flight plan was filed.

“We have apologised to customers for this interruption to their journey and will be contacting them all individually.”
