Voice of the Mirror: Once reliable GPs service in danger of collapse

The country’s network of GP surgeries are the bedrock of the NHS.

They are most people’s first port of call if they need advice, support or treatment.

But what was once a reliable service that served patients well is in danger of collapse.

A survey by medical journal Pulse found the average wait for a GP appointment in England is longer than two weeks for the first time ever.

People are not getting the care they need – with potentially fatal consequences.

Years of cuts and under-investment by the Tories mean there are simply not enough GPs.

Those who are working struggle to cope with the increased demands placed on them.

This lack of local healthcare has a debilitating impact on other parts of the NHS.

People increasingly have to go to A&E, putting pressure on over-stretched hospitals.

The Government has been repeatedly warned it needs to recruit more doctors.

Instead, it has overseen the closure of walk-in centres, cut public health budgets and prompted an exodus of staff from the NHS.

We need an urgent plan to recruit more GPs to rescue an essential part of the health service.
