Voice of the Mirror: May's legacy will be topped by theft of free TV licences

Theresa May’s legacy will be topped by the theft of free TV licences from 3.7 million pensioners unless in her final days she heeds the sensible advice of Gordon Brown, the Labour former PM who introduced the benefit for over-75s.

Thrashing about in Britain and traipsing the world in search of reasons to be remembered is a pointless exercise by May unless she blocks plans to charge D-Day veterans and their generation £154.50 each to watch TV.

Brown recognises the truth and so too will May if she is honest with herself.

Blame rests with the Conservatives who turned the BBC into a branch office of the Department for Work and Pensions.

What the Tories did, May can undo by restoring Government funding of free licences.

Put kids first

The soaring numbers of children who need treatment for mental illnesses is a health crisis when local social services are chronically underfunded after Tory austerity hammered council budgets.

The 54% rise in cases coupled with a 60% financial axe means too many are being denied or forced to wait for treatment.

Conditions once ignored and undetected that are now diagnosed, combined with intensifying pressures on youngsters in the social media age, require investment.

Once again Tory talk about improving mental health care is exposed as spin and hot air.

Spot the royal

Couples are ordinarily entitled to do what they wish but the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are no ordinary couple.

Especially given the £2.4million and counting that is being lavished on their “cottage” from the public purse.

One of roles of the royals is to be seen so perhaps they may wish to reconsider holding a private christening for son Archie.

The lure of the monarchy will quickly fade the moment people feel we aren’t receiving value for money.
