Virgin Media down for hours as it suffers broadband outage in London as well as TV issues

VIRGIN Media has been hit with a slew of problems today with a broadband outage in parts of London and TV customers reporting issues this morning.

The issues began around 8am with 905 reports of problems on outage reporting site Downdetector.co.uk.

Virgin Media told The Sun some of its 8.7million customers experienced a brief issue with their TV service this morning, while some of its 6million broadband customers in parts of London have been without internet for the best part of today.

But Virgin Media says both problems have now been resolved, adding that the majority of its users were unaffected.

It comes as around 30 per cent of the UK are relying on the internet to work from home as part of the government’s coronavirus restrictions.

Complaints website Downdetector.co.uk, which lets users report issues they’re having with a particular service, recorded that around 60 per cent of Virgin Media customers were having problems with their internet at 8am.

Around 21 per cent of the complaints reported were to do with the TV service not working, and 14 per cent were about troubles with mobile internet.

Customers also took to Twitter to complain about the lack of service.

One wrote: “@virginmedia what is going on with Virgin Media this morning in Plymouth? Breaking up pixels on screen. I unplugged the equipment for 10 minutes check all cables and still breaking up, picture freeze, sound goes off (what am I paying for)?????”

Another said: “Working from home when we have Virgin Media is a bloody nightmare.”

Carol simply wrote: “Again!” alongside a screen shot of the service status that read: “No Internet Connection.”

And Kate wrote: “@virginmedia – are you having technical issues in the SS14 area? We cannot connect to WiFi.”

A Virgin Media spokesperson said this afternoon: “We’re pleased to say the London broadband issue is now fixed. We’re sorry once again and we realise this was a frustrating situation for those affected.”

It’s not the first time in recent months Virgin Media has suffered from technical difficulties.

During one outage in April, tracker DownDetector.co.uk recorded more than 41,000 complaints from customers while another problem in May saw 78 per cent of users reporting problems with their cable internet.

The provider has a dedicated web page where you can find out if there are any problems in your area – here is how you can check.

Virgin Media is signed up to the Automatic Compensation Scheme which makes it easier for customers to get their money back when their service goes wrong.

On this occasion, it’s unlikely you’ll get any compensation automatically though as the scheme only covers customers when internet goes down for two or more full days.

Earlier this month, Sky Broadband went down leaving hundreds of customers without internet.

TalkTalk, BT and Post Office internet have all suffered an outage recently too, leaving thousands of customers unable to work from home.
