Virgil van Dijk's comments about Barcelona star Lionel Messi will WORRY Liverpool fans

Liverpool travel to Spain for the first leg of their semi-final on Wednesday with Van Dijk recently awarded the PFA Player of the Year trophy.

Fans are starting to believe the defender could even be in with a shout of winning the Ballon d’Or.

Currently held by Luka Modric, the prestigious honour had been shared between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for the preceding 10 years.

Van Dijk, however, does not think he will be in the reckoning for the 2019 award, describing those that do win it as otherworldly.

That could worry Liverpool fans in the build up to the Champions League clash with Van Dijk the man they hope will stop Messi and co from romping to another final.

“Nah, that’s not something that’s on my mind at all,” Van Dijk replied when asked about winning the Ballon d’Or at the end of the year.

“There are currently players walking around in this football world that are out of this world basically, and they’ve been doing it for many years.

“I’m very happy how I perform at the moment, how consistent I’m performing, that I’m fit as well.

“I think I just need to not look too far ahead.

“Right now we’re in a tight title race, in the Champions League semi-finals against a fantastic team, where probably the best players are playing so we just take it game by game.

“For us now it’s time to focus on Barcelona midweek and then we have a big game at Newcastle away as well so I won’t look too far ahead and the only goals I will set are personal goals with Liverpool.”

Messi takes on Liverpool having just lifted Barcelona’s 26th LaLiga title, earned with a 1-0 win over Levante on the weekend.

In what has been a normal goalscoring season for the Argentine, he has registered 36 goals domestically on top of 10 in the Champions League.

Manchester United know to their cost what happens when you give Messi too much space in the final third but Liverpool go to the Camp Nou boasting the Premier League’s best defensive record.

Van Dijk has started every game of the Reds’ incredible challenge of Manchester City for the title, conceding just 20 goals in 36 matches.

Wednesday’s first leg kicks off at 8pm with the return at Anfield on Tuesday, May 7 at the same time.
