Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk admits he prefers to be partnered alongside Joe Gomez at centre-back.

The Dutchman’s had a range of defensive partners since joining the club in a £75million deal from Southampton in 2018, including Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez.

Matip has often been first choice but the Cameroonian’s injury problems this term has given Gomez a window of opportunity to stake his claim, while Lovren looks set for an exit this summer.

And, in a ringing endorsement of Gomez’s progress in the last 12 months, van Dijk has admitted the England ace is his favourite centre-back partner.

Asked which defender he’d most like to be partnered with in world football, van Dijk simply replied with Gomez’s Twitter handle.

The Dutchman was participating in a Q&A on Twitter and he answered a range of questions on his career, from Celtic to Liverpool.

Van Dijk admitted that Lionel Messi is the toughest player he’s ever faced but there was special mention for Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero, who he said was the most difficult to mark.
