Vincent Kompany suffers defeat on managerial debut as Anderlecht lose to Oostende

Vincent Kompany’s first competitive game as Anderlecht player-manager ended in defeat on Sunday.

The former Manchester City captain started himself in defence, but couldn’t prevent his new side falling to a 2-1 loss to KV Oostende..

Kompany, 33, ended his 11-year stint at the Etihad in May after City’s domestic dominance last season.

On his managerial bow back in Brussels, Kompany handed his former City teammate Samir Nasri a debut in the Belgian Pro League also, introducing the ex-France international as a second-half substitute.

But the duo couldn’t lead Anderlecht – looking to challenge for the title after a disappointing 2018-19 campaign – to victory, despite them taking an early lead at the Constant Vanden Stock.

Anderlecht fans unveiled a huge banner behind the goal pre-game, dedicated to Kompany, declaring: “He left a prince, he returned a King’.

And after a bright start, Anderlecht took the lead after just 12 minutes, thanks to Michel Vlap.

However, they were only in front for six minutes, with former striker Ronald Vargas coming back to haunt his old side on his return to Belgian football – having spent the last two years in Australia.

And with just 15 minutes remaining, the visitors took the lead; former Manchester United youngster Indy Boonen teed up Fashion Junior Sakala, who put the away side in front.

Anderlecht tried to muster up a response, but couldn’t find an equaliser late in the day.
