A new Vikings teaser has hinted at Lagertha’s downfall in the next installment of the History Channel hit.

While her fate is not yet known, it has been rumoured that the shieldmaiden will meet her end partway through season six.

However, it looks as though she has a long way to go before then, as actress Katheryn Winnick has teased both the warrior’s plans and retirement in a recent interview.

Alongside a brand new trailer for the show, the 41-year-old opened up about her character’s future.

She said: ‘Lagertha has a new purpose in life. I do truly believe that Lagertha has a plan.’

Shooting to a clip from the impending episodes, Lags can be seen talking to Ragnar’s son Ubbe (Jordan Patrick Smith), as she states what she wants from the final chapter of her life.

‘I no longer wish to be famous,’ she can be heard saying.

And it seems her late husband’s son is bemused by her claims, as she added: ‘You want to retire and disappear? The most famous shieldmaiden in the whole of Scandinavia.’

Director Michael Hirst then appeared on the screen as he addressed Lagertha’s wishes – and it turns out she misses Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) just as much as we do.

‘She wants to go back to the life she had with Ragnar,’ the 66-year-old said before he continued: ‘Because that’s when she was at her happiest.’

He then addressed Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig), and confessed: ‘Bjorn having become king, he is finding kingship so complicated and so difficult.’

Alexander chirped in: ‘Season six is definitely Bjorn’s season. It’s about his journey as a king and him trying to find a way as a leader.

As well as this, the new clip teases what’s to come for both Hvitserk (Marco Ilsø) and Ivar The Boneless (Alex Høgh Andersen), and while the exiled king is teaming up with the newcomer Prince Oleg (Danila Valeryevich Kozlovsky), it seems his brother is having troubles of his own.

‘Hvitserk doesn’t know what’s at stake for himself and for his character,’ the 25-year-old muttered in a voice-over while Hvitserk is seen hallucinating Ivar.

It seems the new season will be playing mind games on both its viewers and their much-loved Nordics – and we can’t wait.

Vikings season six returns to the History Channel and Amazon Prime 4 December.
