Vikings fans were saw an explosive finale earlier this year as the evil Ivar (played by Alex Høgh Andersen) lost the battle and Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig) was crowned Ironside the king of Kattegat.
Although the Amazon Prime hit is on its final outing there are still plenty of unanswered questions and many fans are wondering why Bjorn made a claim to the throne.
Fans will remember Bjorn’s father Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) seemingly had no interest in ruling and his final vision seemed to show his father’s disapproval.
The season five finale ended with Bjorn’s vision where he saw himself holding the same sword on top of an army of dead bodies as his father’s voice is heard.
Ragnar’s voice asked his son what he is fighting for and he questions what will become of him.
However, in a recent interview creator Michael Hirst spoke out about why Bjorn took to the throne in the end, revealing Bjorn feels differently to his father and speculates he will be a good ruler.
In conversation with Variety, Michael said: “Kattegat is, in terms of our Vikings world, the spiritual home.
“Ultimately everything goes back to Kattegat and if you really want to wear the mantle of Ragnar Lothbrok and really succeed in this Vikings world you have to be king of Kattegat. Or Queen.
“There was that great scene with Bjorn and his father on top of that cliff in the mountain, and his father didn’t want to rule.
“And didn’t like the idea of ruling and thought that it was corrupt. Bjorn feels differently; he feels that he could be a good ruler.”

Moreover, the creator spilled on what kind of ruler Bjorn will be and what he hopes to achieve in the future.
Michael continued: “I think we’re on the liberal wing of the Viking party.
“He wants to open Kattegat up to trade and be a much better ruler than Ivar.”
However, the Michael also hinted the Viking will have difficulty with his newfound leadership, teasing trouble ahead.
The creator added: “There are problems with kingship and Bjorn is a great warrior, but whether he’s a great ruler — and having to deal with complicated and serious political and social issues — that’s another matter.
“So his spirit drives him back to Kattegat, back to the soul of the Viking world, and then we’ll see in Season 6 how he gets on with that responsibility.”
How will Bjorn cope with the pressures of leadership?
Moreover, his decision making could run him into trouble as Bjorn’s liberal nature is bound to cause controversy and challenges to his leadership in the next outing.
With power comes great criticism and the next outing could see Ragnar’s son killed as fans are set to see more bloody battles and devastation.
Vikings season six is expected to return to History Channel and Amazon Prime Video this year.
