England have won the ICC Cricket World Cup for the first time after one of the most dramatic matches in cricketing history.
In the final at Lord’s the result was decided on the final ball of the “Super Over” after both sides ended their innings on 241. In their extra six balls England scored 15-0 meaning New Zealand needed to hit 16 to win the trophy.
Needing two runs from the final ball Kiwi batsman Martin Guptill scored a single before being run out. This meant that England won the World Cup having scored more boundaries during the match.
Ben Stokes was the star of England’s innings, hitting 84 not out as the hosts chased 242 to win. He then came out to bat for the super over with Jos Buttler and the duo scored eight and seven runs respectively.
In New Zealand’s super over England gave bowler Joffra Archer the responsibility and his first ball went for a wide. Jimmy Neesham scored 13 from five balls, but Guptill was unable to return for the two runs needed on the final delivery and the cup was England’s.
