Video games make their way from consoles to varsity classrooms – Times of India


Kolkata: Several colleges and universities in Kolkata are providing under- and post-graduate courses in gaming to train students for employment opportunities arising from the boom in the gaming industry worldwide, coupled with mobile penetration in India. These courses are training students in coding, digital designing, developing stories within the games and three dimensional animation to acquaint them with industry requirements.
“Gaming is not only one of the fastest growing markets in India, it is also becoming a career option. Game art professionals are in great demand across the globe but there are few institutes in the country that provide training on developing video games,” said Meghdut Roy Chowdhury, director (global operations) of Techno India Group, which on Tuesday tied up with French educational institute Intuit Lab to provide Bachelors and Masters degrees in design, art and gaming.
At Presidency University, game studies, which is taught as a part of the English department, takes a critical look at various genres of video games. Last month, gaming enthusiasts, teachers from across the globe and game developers assembled at the university to make discourses within the games more inclusive.
“Games are also interactive media with multiple narratives. In the game studies classes, we abreast the students on history of popular and the not-so-popular games and critically analyse the multiple narratives within a game,” said Souvik Mukherjee, assistant professor and head of English department at Presidency, who got a PhD from Nottingham Trent University, UK, on video games and storytelling.
According to a report by Nasscom, India’s video games market is expected to reach 628 million users and be worth $1.1 billion by 2020. Among all the emerging markets, India is the largest in terms of downloads, with over 2.8 billion game downloads, according to Nasscom.
Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology, West Bengal, was one of the first higher education institutes in the state to provide under-graduate course in video games and mobile applications. “At MAKAUT, our objective is to provide skill-oriented education and train the students in a manner where they get access to development opportunities. Technology is fast changing the requirements of the industry. We had introduced the degree course in video games because the industry offers many opportunities for career advancement, stability, and continued growth,” said a senior faculty member of MAKAUT.
“iLEAD’s curriculum of BSc in gaming aims to provide the students a comprehensive knowledge about every aspect of game development. The students can later on also become AI coders, virtual reality coders, analytics expert and more from having the obvious option of going in the core gaming industry,” said Pradip Chopra, iLEAD chairman.
