Video games and Controversies by Cameron Royer-Kennedy, Reigate College – Surrey Comet

The video gaming industry has seen mass growth since the first ever video game Pong was released to the public in October of 1958. This lead on to then bigger things like the Magnavox Odyssey Video Game Unit the first ever video gaming console released in 1972 by Atari leading the way for modern gaming. Then years later big brands like Nintendo and Microsoft starting to really capitalise on the growing interest of the people producing mass numbers of new games by themselves, or through third parties, and coming out with new and updated consoles, handheld devises or otherwise.

However this has not come without its controversies staring first in 1976 with “Death Race”, the problem when getting hit the character got hit it’d make a pained noise and a gravestone would come up, the complaints force the company to take it of the market. This kind of violence in video games is bad mentality continues on for years and eventually in 2003 there is a US act named Protect Children from Video Game Sex and Violence Act that would fine retailer $500 for selling violent video games to minors.

A game worthy of its own article with too many controversies to count, blamed for school shootings, attacked for having an optional modification to be very explicit and more, GTA. This game has been one of the most controversial video games to date gaining attention from many parties including Senator Hilary Clinton in 2005, yet it is one of the most successful game franchises out there.

What does this all mean? Games and gaming technologies won’t stop advancing nor will they  stop being outrageous and risky simply because they can.
