Victoria's Secret Fashion Show cancelled for first time in 23 years

Victoria’s Secret has dominated the fashion show world since it launched its iconic catwalk displays in 1995.

However, the annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show has been cancelled for 2019 and isn’t set to return until 2020.

VS Angel Shanina Shaik, who has walked in the show seven times since 2011, revealed the news to The Australian Daily Telegraph on Tuesday.

The28-year-old veteran dropped the huge bombshell and admitted that the famous catwalk show would be taking a break in 2019.

She said: “Unfortunately the Victoria’s Secret show won’t be happening this year.

“It’s something I’m not used to because every year around this time I’m training like an angel. But I’m sure in the future something will happen which I’m pretty sure about. I’m sure they’re trying to work on branding and new ways to do the show because it’s the best show in the world,” she added.

For almost two decades, viewers from around the world have tuned in to watch the annual display as the likes of Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner and Winnie Harlow transform into Angels in the entertainment special.

Throughout the show, a queue of Victoria’s Secret models don their famous bejewelled lingerie and feathered wings to strike a pose at the end of the star-studded catwalk.

The iconic show also usually stars a chart-topping singer, who turns the runway into a stage to perform their greatest hits.

Past guest performers include Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, Bruno Mars, Rita Ora and Shawn Mendes.

Claims that the show has been cancelled this year come after Leslie Wexner, chief executive of Victoria’s Secret’s parent company L Brands, confirmed that the show would no longer be broadcast on network television.

In an email obtained by CNBC in May, Wexner confessed: “We have decided to re-think the traditional Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. Going forward, we don’t believe network television is the right fit.”

In recent years, the lingerie brand had come under fire for its lack of diversity on the runway.

After receiving huge criticism, the show is reportedly working hard to reinvent itself and adapt the annual fantasy show to fit in with the constantly evolving global digital age.
