Victoria Derbyshire would be willing to break the rule of six to have her family of seven together at Christmas.

The rule, put in place following a rise in coronavirus cases in the UK, states that no more than six people can meet up indoors or outdoors.

Concerns have been growing as Christmas fast approaches with people desperate to know if they will be allowed to see other members of their families from different households.

The broadcaster, whose programme was axed in January after five years, insisted they would be extra careful and by a thermometer as a precaution.

She told Radio Times: ‘Joining me, my husband and our two boys will be my mum, her partner and my husband’s dad.

‘It’s fine. We’ll do it knowing what the risks are. We’re not stupid.

‘We’re going to be sensible and buy a thermometer gun. But we have to be together at Christmas.’

The broadcaster, 52, added that she feels ‘irresponsible’ saying she would break the rule but stressed that she ‘needs’ to see her elderly mum and her husband’s elderly dad.

So far Victoria, who is based in London, has kept in touch with her mum, who lives in Bolton, over Zoom, checking in with each other on Saturdays.

As of writing it is not yet clear whether the rule of six will still be in place by Christmas.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has previously said that the Government will do ‘everything we can’ to make sure families can be together over the festive period, leading to speculation that the rule might be lifted on December 25.

Whether the rule is in place on not the festive season is going to be somewhat subdued due to the pandemic with Chrismast markets, public skating rinks and major attractions such as Winter Wonderland being axed this year.

Additionally the 10pm curfew currently in place at pubs and restaurants is likely to continue.
