Venus Williams crashes out of Wimbledon to 15-year-old Cori Gauff

Venus Williams has sensationally crashed out of Wimbledon to 15-year-old American Cori Gauff.

Gauff, the youngest player to ever play in the singles at Wimbledon either male or female in the open era, stunned SW19 by beating the seven-time Grand Slam champion in straight sets.

She won 6-4, 6-4 in a seismic shock which will reverberate around the world of tennis.

Gauff kept her nerve after spurning match points at 40-15 and 40-30 in the final game, plus another on deuce, before wrapping up the historic victory.

She served superbly and was broken only once in making just eight unforced errors – 17 fewer than her opponent who is 24 years her senior.

It marks an eighth successive Grand Slam in which Venus has crashed out at the third round earlier.

After the game, an emotional Gauff said: “I don’t really know how to feel. This is the first time I’ve ever cried after winning.

“I just told her: ‘Thanks for everything’ and that ‘I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for you’.
