Van Der Valk viewers have been left disappointed at the remake, after ITV decided to scrap the original theme tune.

The show kicked off with an investigation into the murder of two political activists in Amsterdam.

But despite the gripping storyline, it seems fans couldn’t get past the first five minutes, as the iconic 70s intro had been reworked.

While there were hints of the OG song, Eye Level, it seemed to lack the gusto of the Simon Park Orchestra masterpiece.

And the slight change didn’t go unnoticed, as people took to Twitter in rage, asking for the channel to fix the soundtrack.

‘The main thing with Van Der Valk *was* the theme tune. The new them is a little weak in comparison,’ one wrote while another added: ‘How can even consider #VanDerValk without THAT theme music? #fail.’

Someone else felt the same: ‘Sticking with it, but so far, so meh with the new #VanDerValk. And not just because of the lack of theme tune. There was the barest hint of the original in it.’

And it seems many more were in agreement: ‘What were they thinking about messing with the theme tune? Bad start.’

The Amsterdam set drama sees Marc Warren (Hustle, The Good Wife) take on the role of titular crimefighter Simon ‘Piet’ Van Der Valk, in a three-part series.

The character was played in the first five series by actor Barry Foster.

Foster, who died in 2002 aged 70, was also known for his role as serial killer Bob Rusk in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1972 thriller Frenzy.

His other film roles included King and Country, Inspector Clouseau, Robbery, Battle Of Britain and the Oscar winner Ryan’s Daughter – while on TV he was seen in the likes of The Troubleshooters, Death Of An Expert Witness and Smiley’s People.

And although the revamped version might be very different from the original – which first graced screens back in the 70s – it should still provide a dose of nostalgia from those who remember it.

Van Der Valk continues Sunday on ITV at 8pm.
