Val Kilmer jokes he laughs 'like a pirate' after throat cancer surgery

Val Kilmer has discussed the impact throat cancer has had on his voice and laugh in a candid interview.

The 60-year-old Hollywood star was diagnosed with the disease in 2015 and is currently recovering from treatment.

Val, who is set to reprise his role as LT Tom “Iceman” Kazanski in the hotly anticipated Top Gun sequel, Top Gun: Maverick in December, now has a tracheotomy to assist him with breathing after being treated.

Speaking to Good Morning America, he joked that he sounded less like he had a frog in his throat, and more like a buffalo due to the device in his throat.

“This is a tracheotomy… to help me breathe because the glands in my throat swelled up as well,” he explained.

“I feel a lot better than I sound, but I feel wonderful,” he declared.

“I was diagnosed with throat cancer, which healed very quickly,” he continued.

He then joked that he now laughs “like a pirate” after the surgery and when asked what he missed most about his old voice he quipped: “That I had one!”

Val first opened up about his fight with cancer in 2017, after initially denying he had the disease when fellow actor Michael Douglas broke the news.

“He was probably trying to help me ‘cause press probably asked where I was these days, and I did have a healing of cancer,” he said at the time.

“Because I don’t sound my normal self yet people think I may still be under the weather.”

Val has previously explained the excitement of reuniting with Tom Cruise to film the Top Gun sequel.

“It was absolutely moving,” he said when the trailer was released last year.

“I really was surprised and Tom was wearing his jacket from the first movie and it was just very moving,” he added.
