US Presidential elections 2020: Democrat candidates set to face Trump

American politics never loses its capacity to shock.

Donald Trump was elected President after being written off as a big-mouth reality TV star standing only to boost his media profile.

Four years on, another US poll surprise may be looming.

Bookies’ favourite among Democrats to face Trump in November’s presidential election is 78-year-old “socialist” Bernie Sanders, at 6/5.

He cemented his position as front-runner for his party’s nomination after winning the New Hampshire primary.

If Sanders can go all the way he would be the oldest and most left-wing candidate ever elected as President.

Married rival Pete Buttigieg (pronounced Boot Edge Edge) is attempting, at 38, to become the youngest and also the first openly gay US leader.

Hardly anyone expected Donald Trump to win last time around

Ex-New York mayor Michael Bloomberg has sat out the race so far but polls suggest he may be best placed to beat Trump, who is all but guaranteed the Republican nomination.

The media tycoon has already spent £270million of his vast wealth on an advertising blitz.

Eight remaining candidates are fighting to secure the Democrats’ nomination. Here the Mirror rates their chances out of 10.
