The police know to always expect the unexpected in their job – but they probably never thought they’d have to capture an escaped kangaroo.
Especially if they’re cops in the US rather than Australia…
It was a strange day for officers in Florida when the fugitive marsupial was spotted bounding through a neighborhood in Fort Lauderdale.
The encounter was luckily caught on bodycam for everyone to have a laugh at.
‘I’m trying to catch a kangaroo,’ an officer is heard saying on the radio as he drives towards the neighbourhood where the kangaroo was spotted.
The marsupial appeared not to care, and calmly licked its paws as police officers, typically used to capturing dogs, pythons or the occasional alligator, mulled over how to catch it.
‘I don’t know what they eat,’ a confused officer said.
Finally, the kangaroo is seen hopping towards a cop who then puts his arms around it as other police officers tie a lead around it.
‘I’m so happy I have this on bodycam,’ he is heard saying.
The kangaroo didn’t appear to put up a fight as officers struggled to push it into a police car. Officers later described it as very ‘friendly’.
One officer mentioned concerns it had an injured paw but the animal appeared to be fine.
The kangaroo was taken to a stable where the police department keeps its horses.
A spokesperson said the kangaroo would stay in the stable while Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission conducts an investigation into how the animal, native to Australia, arrived in Florida.
