Veteran comedian and four-time Emmy winner Valerie Harper has died at the age of 80.

Harper passed away on Friday morning, eight days after her 80th birthday – a family friend confirmed, according to The Guardian.

While the US star’s cause of death is not yet known and no further details surrounding her death have yet been given, Harper’s husband recently said that he had been advised to place the star in hospice care.

Harper had battled a variety of health issues over the years – she was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2009, and terminal brain cancer in 2013.

She didn’t let that stop her, however, as she appeared on the US version of Dancing With the Stars later in 2013.

Harper and her partner, Irish dancer Tristan MacManus, were eliminated in the fourth week of the competition.

The esteemed actress started her career on Broadway before landing the role of Rhoda on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and eventually getting her own spin-off, Rhoda, in 1974, which aired for five seasons.

Harper received the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series three times during her time on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and went on to receive the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her work on Rhoda.

She later returned to Broadway, starring as Talullah Bankhead in 2010’s Looped, for which she was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play.

More recently, Harper had appeared as a guest on The Simpsons, Desperate Housewives, American Dad!, and Two Broke Girls.
