A songwriter who has worked on hits with Beyoncé, Taylor Swift and The Rolling Stones has sold his back catalogue to a London-listed music investor.

Hipgnosis Songs Fund has bought the rights to 436 songs from Jeff Bhasker, who has won five Grammy awards and has penned and produced tracks with Ed Sheeran, Harry Styles, Kanye West and Jay Z.

The catalogue includes Sheeran’s Photograph, the 13th most-streamed song with more than 1.3 billion plays, and Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars, which has been streamed 1.1 billion times on Spotify alone. Bhasker co-wrote and produced Uptown Funk, which was recently hailed by  Billboard  magazine as its “song of the decade”.

Merck Mercuriadis, founder of Hipgnosis Songs Fund, said: “You would be hard pressed to name a creator of the past 20 years that is more important than Jeff. He has rewritten the rule book on how art makes it to Number 1.”

Neil Jacobson, founder of Bhasker’s management company, Crescent Drive Productions, added: “Merck is an art collector with a keen eye for masterpieces rather than say a commodities guy who is just valuing income streams. I realise when you zoom out, they probably are pretty close to the same thing, but it makes a difference to me and to my artists to know that whoever is acquiring this great music understands it and loves it.”
