Officers had snuck into her backyard and saw Atatiana’s silhouette through the bedroom window.

The unidentified officer shot her immediately after ordering her to put her hands up.

According to the New York Times, Atatiana’s 8-year-old nephew was still in the room when she was shot.

FORT WORTH, Texas A Fort Worth police officer has been placed on administrative leave after he shot and killed a woman in her own home early Saturday.

28-year old Atatiana Jefferson was pronounced dead on the scene after the officer shot her through her bedroom window, according to a press release from the Fort Worth Police Department.

A press release also states that the officer was responding to an Open Structure call in the 1200 block of E. Allen Ave.

WFAA reports Atatiana’s neighbor, James Smith, says he called the non-emergency police number to request a welfare check for the home after he saw the home’s lights on and the front door open.

Body Camera footage released by FWPD shows the officer circled the house, moving from the front door to the backyard.

He stands outside Atatiana’s bedroom window, appears to catch sight of her, then raises his weapon.

The officer can be heard shouting “Put your hands up! Show me your hands!”

Within seconds of this, he fires a single shot through the window.

At no point in the video did he identify himself as a police officer.

According to the press release, officers entered the home and allegedly discovered a firearm in the residence as they were attempting to administer emergency medical care.

It is unclear where the officers located the firearm and whether or not Atatiana was actually wielding the weapon when she was shot.

The officer has only been identified as a white male who has been with the department since April of 2018.

Sources say that the Fort Worth Major Case unit, Internal Affairs, and the Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney’s Law Enforcement Incident Team have been notified of this incident and are investigating the shooting

This is an ongoing investigation and Texas Breaking News will update you when more information is available.
