With the Until Dawn remake about to arrive on PlayStation 5 and PC, several signs point to the development of a potential sequel.
While it isn’t treated with quite the same reverence as other PlayStation exclusives, Until Dawn is still a popular title and the genesis of a whole sub-genre of narrative-driven horror games.
Developed by Supermassive Games, the 2015 interactive horror drama shaped the direction of the entire studio – leading to similar projects, such as The Dark Pictures Anthology, The Quarry, and the recent Dead By Daylight spin-off The Casting Of Frank Stone.
While Until Dawn was a financial success, the recent announcement of a remake and a film adaptation has felt somewhat out of the blue – but it seems as if it’s all leading up to a belated sequel.
According to insider Nick Baker of XboxEra (who has been the source of a number of non-Xbox related rumours in the past), an Until Dawn sequel is in development at PlayStation studio Firesprite.
The Liverpool-based studio was acquired by Sony in 2021 and co-developed 2023 VR game Horizon Call Of The Mountain. It’s unclear what the studio has been working on since, but a job listing back in April 2022 sought a Narrative Director for a ‘AAA narrative driven horror adventure game in Unreal Engine 5’.
An Until Dawn sequel certainly fits that bill but it isn’t the only rumour floating around. Last month, a report speculated that Firesprite could be working on a new Forbidden Siren game, which is a lesser known PlayStation 2 horror franchise that originally stemmed from Japan Studio.
This makes it difficult to tell what exactly is happening because not only is there good evidence to suggest that an Until Dawn sequel is in the works but mention of Forbidden Siren has turned up in the PSN database and the Korean age rating board.
Rumours continue to connect Firesprite to the project, whatever it is, but that seems strange given the original was by a Japanese team (many of who had worked on Silent Hill) and set in Japan.
If Firesprite are taken out of the equation, it still seems as if a sequel to Until Dawn is at least on the cards somewhere. Thanks to leaks ahead of its release, players have discovered the Until Dawn remake features a new ending which hints at a follow-up far more overtly than the original version.
What is the new ending in the Until Dawn remake?
You can check out the ending on Reddit (turn away now to avoid spoilers), but it changes the fate of two characters. In one of two new post credits scenes, Josh (played by Rami Malek) is shown to have survived his encounter with the Wendigo creature, as a voiceover from Dr. Hill talks about the potential for redemption.
In the original game, Josh can be either killed or is shown to have transformed into the Wendigo beast.
In the second post credits scene, Sam (played by Hayden Panettiere) is seen several years later in Los Angeles surrounded by pill bottles. When she is woken up by her alarm, she finds blood is coming from a wound on her arm, before a mysterious voice whispers her name from the door. With the distortion, and the amount of pills everywhere, it’s unclear if it is a hallucination or real.
There seems no reason why the remake would make these additions unless it was teeing up a sequel, so it feels like Until Dawn 2 is practically locked in.
As for Until Dawn’s original developers Supermassive Games, the studio’s next game, Directive 8020, is set to kick off the second season of The Dark Pictures anthology. It’s set to be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC in 2025.
Who are PlayStation developer Firesprite?
Firesprite is a British game developer formed in 2012 by former members of Studio Liverpool, formely known as Psygnosis. Studio Liverpool were known for many classic PlayStation games such as Lemmings, WipEout, and Colony Wars.
After the studio formed, Firesprite provided support work on PlayStation 4’s AR tech demo The Playroom, and mobile game Run Sackboy! Run. The studio went onto create 2018 survival horror The Persistence, before they were acquired by Sony in 2021.
After development on Horizon Call Of The Mountain in 2023, the studio has reportedly seen a number of exits from core staff members, amid allegations of a toxic workplace culture. The studio was also hit by job cuts earlier this year as part of mass layoffs across Sony.
