Unai Emery hinted Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could be named as Arsenal’s pernamant captain.

The Arsenal boss is still deciding whether to strip Granit Xhaka after his explosive clash with fans at the Emirates.

Despite Xhaka’s public apology during the week, the midfielder was not named in the side that drew 1-1 with Watford on Saturday, with vice-captain Aubameyang stepping up in his absence.

‘[He] could do,’ Emery said about Aubameyang continuing as skipper after the draw against Watford.

‘I think he can take that responsibility and today he did that,’ Emery continued.

‘He is one of the captains and I think he can take that responsibility, but we are going to analyse the match first and the situation for the next matches and decide.’

Aubameyang is one of four vice-captains at Arsenal, with Xhaka, Mesut Ozil, Alexandre Lacazette and Hector Bellerin all part of the leadership core at the club.

Aubameyang scored Arsenal’s only goal against Watford, his 50th for the club, before Raul Jimenez’s header claimed a point for the Hornets at the Emirates.

Another disappointing Premier League performance leaves Arsenal fifth in the table, three points behind Leicester City and the final Champions League qualifying spot.

Emery praised his side’s tactical display against Watford, but was disappointed with his side’s failure to convert chances to kill the game off with a second goal.

‘Really, we worked very well today in a different tactical situation,’ Emery said.

‘We didn’t concede a big transition with big chances, we went 1-0 up, created chances to score the second but we needed more efficiency in that action.

‘We can improve and we must improve that balance defensively but above all, today the key was to have more clear chances to score the second goal and take the result.

‘The result is a bad result but tactically, I think we worked like we wanted.’
