Unai Emery has detailed which positions he is looking to strengthen this summer at Arsenal, but insists he will only sign players that will ‘really, really improve’ his team.

The Gunners have completed the signings of William Saliba, Gabriel Martinlli and Dani Ceballos so far this transfer window.

However, centre-back Saliba is being immediately loaned back to Saint-Etienne and midfielder Ceballos is only on a season-long loan from Real Madrid, while 18-year-old forward Martinelli is unlikely to be thrown straight into the first team.

Nicolas Pepe is expected to arrive from Lille imminently, but Emery is still looking to make more signings, assuming the signing (and immediate departure) of Saliba does not fulfill his need for a new centre back.

‘We are deciding how we can improve,’ Emery said after a friendly with Lyon on Sunday. ‘At the beginning we were thinking to do one player to achieve the possibility to sign, but only if we can really, really improve this position.

‘It’s one centre back, one midfielder and one winger and we are going to [try] to do that.

‘We are thinking the same. I want a team that is better than last year, so the players can achieve a lot being with us this season.

‘Also we have a very good team. Only the players that can improve and help the squad [will be brought in].’

With Pepe about to arrive, it appears has got his winger, and Ceballos will tick the midfielder box, but with Saliba heading straight back on loan, a signing in central defence seems to be the final piece of the jigsaw.

Juventus centre back Daniele Rugani is the latest to be linked with a move to the Emirates, with the Gunners interested in a loan deal for the Italian.

The 25-year-old only made 15 Serie A appearances last season, and his playing time may be even more limited this time around thanks to the arrival of Matthijs de Ligt from Ajax and Leonardo Bonucci and Georgio Chiellini still at the club.
